Victor Anderson (1882 - 1937), title - "Unexpected Gift", oil on canvas, framed. Measurements - 20 1/4" x 16", with frame - 20 1/2" x 24 1/4". signed - lower right. A painter and illustrator who lived briefly in Texas in the early 1930s, Victor Anderson spent most of his life in New York state, settling in White Plains where he died in 1937. He was the son of Frank Anderson, a Hudson River School painter, and although his father died when he was eight years old, Victor drew and painted from the time he was a youngster. When he enrolled in the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, he was accomplished enough to go directly into the life-drawing class. He studied with Birge Harrison at Woodstock, New York during one summer and also took classes from Hobart Nichols and Herman Dudley Murphy. In New York City, while he maintained a high-powered illustration career, he was also an active fine-art painter and had memberships and exhibited at the Grand Central Art Galleries and the Salmagundi Club and exhibited at the National Academy of Design. As an illustrator, he did commission work for magazines including "Life", "Woman's Home Companion", "Collier's", "Country Gentlemen", and "The Ladies Home Journal". He illustrated two children's books, "Tommy Trot's Visit to Santa Claus" and "Moonbeam Wish Book". Born in Philadelphia, PA on Jan. 17, 1851. At age 15 Frost was apprenticed to engravers and lithographers. His only formal art training was in the evening classes of the PAFA under Thomas Eakins. He often worked in black and white and is said to have been color blind which is probably why he specialized in magazine illustration. A farm in New Jersey was his home after 1883 and the years 1908-16 were spent in Paris. Upon retiring in 1919, he joined his son John in Pasadena, CA and lived there until his death on June 22, 1928. Folk pictures and historical genre with dramatic or comedic themes were his forte. He also painted sporting scenes, still lifes, and landscapes. Landscape and marine painter Albert Babb Insley was born in 1842, growing up in Jersey City, New Jersey. He was active early in the arts. At age fourteen in 1856, he received his first major painting commission of the Llewellyn Park Estate of D.C. Otis; and the same year he left school to become an apprentice photographer under his father, Henry Earle Insley, who was one of the earliest pioneer photographers in America. In 1860, at age 18, Insley made his first of many painting trips to the Green and White Mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire and to the Shawangunk Mountains of New York. When only twenty-five, Insley began exhibiting on a regular basis at the National Academy of Design in New York City, having exhibited 36 times from 1862 to 1898. He continued his artistic studies, even as an exhibiting artist, with the well-known Jasper Cropsey in 1864 and 1865. By the early 1860s, he was an art instructor with Henry L. Hillyer at New York University, Waverly Place, New York City. He was also a long-time exhibitor from 1869 to 1891 at the Brooklyn Art Association. In New York City, he lived and worked at the Tenth Street Studio Building for 48 years. He also took regular painting trips north of the city and across the Hudson River in New Jersey, as well as in the New England states. He also painted views of New York harbor, Staten Island and Bayonne, New Jersey. In the early 1880s, Insley's work reflected the influence of the Barbizon School of France. Insley took an art class on glazing techniques with George Inness Sr. who influenced him to become looser and more expressive. During the summers of 1864 and 1865, he studied landscape painting with Jasper Francis Cropsey at his home on Greenwood Lake, which caused him to lighten his palette. The long-lived artist died in Nyack, New York in 1937 at age 95. His memberships included the Boston Arts Club, Brooklyn Art Association, Nanuet Painters and Sculptors Guild, National Academy of Design, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Salmagundi Club. His collections include the Archives of American Art, Washington, D.C.; Cragsmoor Free Library, New York; Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington; Harding Museum, Chicago; Jersey City Museum, New Jersey; Preservation Society, Newport, Rhode Island; and the Rockland Historical Society, New York. Jenner, Isaac Walter (1837–1902), painting depicting a boats on the beach at dawn. His most popular subjects were the Sussex and Cornish coasts and large historical seascapes. He was born on March 18, 1837 at Brighton, Sussex, England, son of Thomas Jenner, blacksmith, and his wife Harriet, née Walter. Without known formal education, he worked on oyster and crab smacks and signed on for a voyage in Arctic waters. In March 1855 he joined the Royal Navy, serving during the Crimean War in the Black Sea and in H.M.S. Retribution at the Dardanelles. In 1864 he was present at the bombardment of Shimonoseki, Japan. Discharged in 1865, he learned to paint and worked as a landscape and marine painter in 1873-79 at Brighton and at Hove in 1880-83; he exhibited at Brighton, Lewes and once at the Royal Academy. He emigrated to Australia and landed in Brisbane on September 19, 1883. He taught at Miss O'Connor's School, Oxley, and at the Brisbane Technical College in 1887-89, otherwise making a living by selling paintings and holding art unions. Although he traveled in New South Wales and New Zealand in 1889, he exhibited only in Brisbane and at the Centennial International Exhibition of 1888-89 in Melbourne. He had helped to found the Queensland Art Society in 1887. He moved his studio in 1890 to Montrose Road, Taringa, where he lived and worked for the rest of his life. In 1895 he gave one of his large seascapes, 'Cape Chudleigh, Labrador' (1890) to the Queensland National Gallery soon after its opening. He died at Taringa on 1 March 1902. He was survived by his wife Mary, née Jenkins, whom he had married on May 23, 1860 at Anthony, Cornwall, and by three sons and three daughters.
